Toileting is one of the most personal and often stressful developmental milestones—for children and parents alike. For many families, traditional toilet training advice simply doesn’t work. If your child struggles with things like avoiding the toilet, holding in their wee or poo, frequent accidents, or becoming anxious or overwhelmed in the bathroom, it could be more than just a behavioural issue. Their sensory system may be playing a big role.

This workshop offers a fresh and compassionate perspective: looking at toileting through a sensory lens.

Presented by experienced sensory integration-trained occupational therapists, this workshop helps parents understand how the sensory system influences toileting readiness and success. You’ll learn how things like your child’s sensitivity to touch, movement, sound, smell, or internal body signals (like needing the toilet) can affect their ability to feel safe, confident, and in control of the toileting process.

Whether your child is neurodivergent (for example, has autism or ADHD) or simply has some sensory processing differences, this workshop will equip you with a deeper understanding of why toileting might be difficult—and what you can do about it.

We’ll cover:

  • The sensory foundations needed for toileting
  • Why some children seem “ready” but still resist or struggle
  • How anxiety, control, and sensory sensitivities interact
  • Practical, everyday strategies to support your child at home
  • How to build a toileting routine that feels safe and manageable—for both of you

You’ll leave feeling more confident, better informed, and empowered to support your child’s toileting journey without pressure or shame.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You feel stuck or frustrated with toileting
  • Your child is anxious, avoids the toilet, or has accidents
  • You suspect sensory challenges might be playing a role
  • You want gentle, practical strategies that really help

Let’s move beyond the stress and into understanding. Because when we look through a sensory lens, toileting starts to make more sense—for everyone.
