Supporting Left-Handed Learners in the Classroom

Left-handedness is often misunderstood, yet approximately 10% of children are left-handed. Small adjustments in the classroom can make a significant difference to a child's comfort, confidence, handwriting and participation.

This practical one-hour workshop is designed specifically for teachers and provides an evidence-informed introduction to left-handedness. You'll gain a deeper understanding of how hand dominance develops, dispel common myths, and learn simple, effective strategies that can be implemented immediately in the classroom.

Topics include:
Understanding left-handedness: prevalence, genetics, myths and misconceptions
Development of hand dominance
Evidence-based writing principles
Paper positioning, wrist posture and pencil grasp
Cutting principles for left-handed learners
Practical classroom strategies to support success

Whether you're a Foundation Phase teacher, Intermediate Phase teacher, remedial educator or teaching assistant, you'll leave with greater confidence in supporting the left-handed children in your classroom.
